Why should I choose A Safe Start - and how do I know I'll get results?
We believe the correct teaching improves performance and increases confidence and motivation. We help students with everyday challenges like reverse parking, 3-point turns, parking in shopping centres and making good decisions in tight situations.
Our lessons are detailed and one-on-one, and go deep on corner turning, scanning and observation. See our three reasons to choose us.
How much do you charge for a lesson?
Every lesson is 2 hours, including Sundays.
- Automatic: $200 cash, any time. PayPal: $207, or $227 for 6–8 am and 5–7 pm lessons. = 6 hours in your logbook (triple time)
- Manual: $200 cash, any time. PayPal: $227. = 6 hours in your logbook (triple time)
- Safe Start (three 2-hour lessons): $590 cash, PayPal $608 automatic / $668 manual. = 18 hours in your logbook (triple time)
- Build Your Confidence (five 2-hour lessons): $970 cash, PayPal $1,000 automatic / $1,100 manual. = 30 hours in your logbook (triple time)

- Test Day: $300 cash, PayPal $309 (two-hour lesson + car for your test).
- Public holidays: $220 cash all day, PayPal $227.

Do you charge more on public holidays?
Yes — on Queensland public holidays (including the Brisbane Ekka show day) every lesson (automatic or manual) is $220 cash for the whole day, or $227 with PayPal. That includes Christmas Eve, all day. Test Day and package prices stay the same. See the public holiday dates.
How do I pay?
Either way suits us: pay cash to your instructor on the day of each lesson (the default — nothing to pay when you send a lesson request), or pay online with PayPal when you book, using a PayPal account or a debit/credit card through PayPal. Cash: $200 per lesson. Pay online (PayPal): $207 for an automatic lesson ($227 for 6–8 am and 5–7 pm lessons), $227 for a manual lesson and $309 for Test Day. Packages: Cash: half at the first lesson, half at the halfway lesson. Or pay in full online with PayPal. We don't take bank transfers.
Do you offer packages?
Yes, three packages of 2-hour lessons:
- Safe Start: three 2-hour lessons, $590 cash (save $10). = 18 hours in your logbook (triple time)
- Build Your Confidence: five 2-hour lessons, $970 cash (save $30). = 30 hours in your logbook (triple time)
- The Works: five 2-hour lessons + test day package, $1,250 cash (save $50). = 30 hours in your logbook (triple time)
Cash: half at the first lesson, half at the halfway lesson. Or pay in full online with PayPal. Savings compared with buying the same lessons individually at current cash prices. See packages.
Lessons & times
How long are lessons?
All lessons are 2 hours. That's long enough to warm up, practise properly and make real progress. And your first 10 hours with an accredited instructor count triple: up to 30 logbook hours.
What days and times do you teach?
Sunday to Friday. Closed Saturdays. Lessons are fixed 2-hour times:
- 6–8 am$227 if paid online
- 9–11 amTap to book
- 11 am–1 pmTap to book
- 1–3 pmTap to book
- 3–5 pmTap to book
- 5–7 pm$227 if paid online
Fridays finish at 1:00 pm: 6–8 am, 9–11 am, 11 am–1 pm only. Need a slightly different time? Times can be moved a little, but please text Henry on 0437 933 923 to confirm.
Will I have to meet you somewhere, or will you pick me up?
We've made it easy: we pick you up and drop you off at your home, school or work, anywhere in our service areas.
What do I need to bring to my lesson?
Bring your learner licence, either the physical card sent to you by TMR or the digital licence on your phone (either is fine), and your logbook, either the paper copy or the logbook app on your phone. If you're paying cash, bring cash for the lesson too (not needed if you've paid online with PayPal).
Do you have manual or automatic cars?
Both. For safe, stress-free lessons we teach in manual and automatic cars with dual controls, so we can stay in control when things get difficult — we can take over from where we're sitting.
How many logbook hours do lessons count for?
In Queensland, every hour with an accredited instructor counts as 3 hours in your learner logbook, up to 10 hours (30 logbook hours).
- One 2-hour lesson = 6 hours in your logbook (triple time).
- Safe Start (three 2-hour lessons) = 18 hours in your logbook (triple time).
- Build Your Confidence (five 2-hour lessons) = 30 hours in your logbook (triple time).
- The Works (five 2-hour lessons + test day package) = 30 hours in your logbook (triple time).
Your first 10 hours with an accredited instructor count triple: up to 30 logbook hours. That’s five 2-hour lessons. After that, hours count as normal. Source: Queensland Government
I've lost my learner licence. Can I still do my lesson?
Most students now have their licence on their phone through the Queensland Digital Licence app, and that's fine to use. If you've lost your physical card and don't have the digital licence on your phone, you'll need to get a replacement from TMR before your lesson, because you can't drive without your licence.
Driving tests
Can you take me to my driving test?
Yes — that's Test Day, $300 cash ($309 with PayPal). It includes a two-hour lesson right before your test, with car hire and insurance for the test. It's also part of The Works package. $300 applies to testing centres around the city. Prices may vary for testing centres outside our usual service area.
Students book and pay for their driving test directly with TMR. Please check our availability before booking. TMR test booking and licence fees are not included. Government fees are subject to change. Book Test Day.
How do I book my driving test?
You book and pay for your practical driving test directly with TMR on the TMR online booking service. Please check our availability before you book, so we can be there for Test Day. TMR test booking and licence fees are not included in our prices.
I'm driving on an overseas licence. Do I need lessons before my test?
Queensland’s road rules and test standards are very different from many other countries. Even experienced drivers often have habits that fail tests here, like rolling through stop signs, not checking blind spots, or speeding through school zones.
If you fail, you lose your right to drive on your overseas licence in Queensland. You’ll need a Queensland learner licence before you can practise again, even with an instructor.
One lesson is usually not enough. In our experience, most overseas drivers need several lessons to unlearn old habits and drive to Queensland standards. We’ll give you an honest assessment in your first lesson and tell you when you’re truly ready.
Don’t risk your licence: book a lesson before you book your test. Queensland Government: overseas licence rules
What do I need before I can book my test?
Car learners must have passed the hazard perception test before booking a practical test, and learners under 25 must have their logbook approved by TMR first (approval can take up to 12 working days). See practical driving tests on qld.gov.au.
Cancellations & policies
I need to cancel or move my lesson...
Please give at least 48 hours’ notice to cancel or move a lesson. Cancelling with less than 48 hours’ notice, or not showing up, costs $150. For packages, a late cancellation or no-show uses up that lesson instead. Please plan your work shifts around your lessons. Being called in to work is not accepted as a reason to cancel late, because Henry is working too and has kept that time for you. If your boss asks you to come in, let them know you have a driving lesson or find someone to cover your shift.

- If you’re not ready at pick-up, Henry will wait 15 minutes. After that it counts as a no-show.
- Henry may end a lesson early, charged in full, if a student isn’t safe to drive (for example unwell, affected by alcohol or drugs, or without their learner licence).
- If Henry needs to cancel, we’ll move your lesson to the next available time. If no suitable time can be found, the lesson will be refunded.
Packages
- Cash packages are paid half at the first lesson and half at the halfway lesson, or in full online with PayPal.
- Packages expire 12 months after the first lesson. Lessons not used by then are forfeited.
- Packages are non-refundable once the first lesson has been taken, except where we can’t provide the remaining lessons, in which case unused lessons are refunded.
- A late cancellation or no-show uses up that lesson from the package (no additional $150 charge).
- Unused lessons can be passed to a brother or sister in the same family.
Test Day
- Students book and pay for their test directly with TMR. Check our availability before booking.
- If TMR or the weather cancels the test, we’ll move your Test Day to the new date at no cost.
- If the test can’t go ahead because of the student (for example missing licence or failing TMR’s pre-test checks), the Test Day package is used up.
- No lesson or package guarantees a pass.
