Queensland logbook hours explained: 100 hours, night driving and triple time

If you’re under 25, you need a completed and approved logbook before you can sit your practical driving test. Here’s how the hours add up.

How many hours do I need?

Learner drivers under 25 must record at least 100 hours of supervised driving on Australian roads, including at least 10 hours at night (between sunset and sunrise). If you’re 25 or over, a logbook isn’t required, but TMR recommends keeping one anyway.

Triple time with an accredited instructor

Every hour of daytime driving with an accredited driver trainer counts as 3 hours in your logbook, up to a maximum of 10 actual hours (30 logbook hours). After that, trainer hours count as normal. At A Safe Start every lesson is 2 hours, so five lessons use up the full triple-time allowance.

A night trip with a trainer can count as triple time or night hours, not both. In the Queensland Learner Logbook app, mark the supervisor as a driver trainer and enter the driving school’s name so eligible trips are tripled.

What each trip needs

  • Date, start and finish times, and total minutes driving
  • Day or night
  • Start and finish locations
  • The car’s number plate and start/finish odometer readings
  • Your supervisor’s name and contact details, and whether they’re an accredited driver trainer

App or paper?

You can use the free Queensland Learner Logbook app, the approved YLOODrive app, a paper logbook, or a mix (just don’t record the same trip twice).

Submit early

Submit your logbook at least 12 business days before your driving test: you can’t sit the test until it’s approved. False or misleading entries can mean a fine and a 6-week wait after resubmission.
